What is Blood Pressure?
The force at which the blood exerts pressure on the walls of the arteries is called Blood Pressure. It is recorded as 2 nos. as per the contractions of the heart.
The upper blood pressure is called Systolic blood pressure. It is measured when the heart is in systole i.e. fully contracted form and pushes the blood with full force out of it. The other blood pressure is called Diastolic blood pressure. The heart relaxes after a systole. This phase is called Diastole and the pressure during this phase of resting of the heart is called diastolic pressure.
The systolic blood pressure is called the “top” pressure and the diastolic one is popularly called lower pressure.
An instrument to measure blood pressure is called Sphygmomanometer . It contains mercury which rises against pressure. A strap tied around the upper arm and a stethoscope put on the brachial artery gives readings on the sphygmomanometer. The upper pressure or the systolic pressure is 120 mm of Hg and lower pressure or the diastolic pressure is 80 mm of Hg.
Normal Blood Pressure is less than 120 mmHg systolic and less than 80 mmHg diastolic.
As the age progresses, the blood pressure starts to shoot up. The hardened arteries are the reason for higher blood pressure as we get aged, since the arteries start to harden with age.
You can understand it as if an elastic rubber pipe in which the water is flowing has certain pressure, but if the rubber pipe hardens due to age, the pressure rises in the pipe. Same is the case with the arteries.
Types of Blood Pressure
In common terms, the two types of blood pressure are mentioned by patients as well as doctors. These 2 types are explained above – Systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The blood pressure related to age is known as Essential hypertension and is the most common disease related to blood pressure increase.
Causes of Blood Pressure
The most common cause of blood pressure is ageing. This is usually referred to as Essential hypertension. This type of blood pressure is most commonly occurring and cause of morbidity and mortality among patients.
The physical causes of blood pressure as explained above are – hardening of arteries due to age.
Major Causes of Blood pressure are as followed
- Hardening of arteries due to age
- Increased levels of catchecolamines – especially in cases of some tumors called pheochromocytoma
Obesity – imagine a small pump, trying to irrigate a big piece of land. The pump gives up finally. Same is the case with heart. Obesity is the leading cause of blood pressure.
Beginning of blood pressure – Stress, Anxiety, Fears and Phobias are the greatest causes of enhanced speed of ageing and development of blood pressure. The blood pressure rises in the arteries if the heart pushes the blood in the arteries with a faster rate and a higher / stronger force. The angiotension causes contraction of the arteries/ smaller vessels which is released from kidneys in case of stress, anxiety. Chronic stresses and fears leads to prolonged release of adrenaline and noradrenaline leading to blood pressure.
Other major causes of blood pressure
- Lack of physical activity
- Chronic kidney disease
- Hormonal imbalances
- Too much salt in the diet
- Too much alcohol consumption
- Growing age – Old age
Essential hypertension – About 95 % of all blood pressure cases are those in which the underlying cause is not identified and they are all called essential hypertensive patients. This type is called essential hypertension.
Secondary hypertension – When a certain cause of blood pressure can be identified, this is called secondary hypertension. Kidney disease is one of the major causes of blood pressure and vice versa. Blood pressure is also one of the major reasons for kidney failure. Blood pressure can also be triggered by some tumors of adrenal glands ( pheochromocytoma)
Birth Control pills can also cause blood pressure and there are certain other drugs which cause blood pressure.
Symptoms of Blood Pressure
- Stiffness at the back of neck
- Redness of eyes – Appearance of red vessels in eyes
- Throbbing headache
